Deodorant. We all need it. It’s one of those products that I HAVE to buy. For myself and for my family.
Things I consider when buying deodorant…
-
How bad are the chemicals in this deodorant?
-
Does the packaging even try to be greener?
-
Does it work?
-
Who owns this brand?
At last count, I have eight deodorants in the house just for myself.
Actually… if we’re being honest…. more if you count what flavors the kids and husband are using.
Which feels like a pretty clear sign I have not found “the one.”
And of all the products I’ve tried to “figure out”… this is the one that’s given me the most trouble.
I’ve tried everything:
-
Think of a name brand…. yep I’ve bought it
-
A crystal/salt rock
-
Patchouli (which my husband absolutely hates)
-
Other essential oils like lemon and citrus
-
Made my own. (However it turns out I have a pretty severe baking soda allergy, so that whole DIY phase didn’t last long.)
To make this even harder…. my underarms are incredibly sensitive.
At one point, after using a very common aluminum-based brand for a while, I started getting painful lumps under my arms. The kind of pain that felt exactly like a clogged milk duct from when I was breastfeeding.
It freaked me out.
I went and had an ultrasound done because I was convinced something was seriously wrong.
I genuinely thought it might be cancer.
It wasn’t.
I found out that it was the deodorant.
So that was the moment this stopped being casual and turned into a full-on hunt for something that actually worked… without wrecking my skin in the process.
Since then, I’ve stood in the aisle staring at what feels like an endless wall of options. I’ve ordered things off Instagram, Amazon, random websites… anything that looked like it might be the one.
And somehow… I’m still here.
Still testing.
Still rotating.
Still trying to figure it out.
In the spirit of full transparency, I decided to just show you what’s actually in my bathroom.
No research spiral.
No brand deals.
No perfectly curated lineup.
Just what’s really in my cabinets and my evaluation of them from least liked to most used.

NATIVE
Official Rating: Pass
Why: Duped by Marketing, Overpromised, Funky Smell, Brand Misalignment
Who owns this: Procter & Gamble
The Reality:
This one should be the answer.
Great branding. Clean aesthetic. Readily available.
But:
-
It doesn’t hold up in the heat
-
There’s a weird musty smell after a few hours that you cannot ignore once you notice it
-
And the “clean brand” story feels a little off when you realize who owns it
I tried the sensitive version—better on skin, same outcome. The sensitive version doesn’t seem to stain like the regular version either.
And… the packaging.
If you’re going to do paper tubes I feel like you should totally commit as a brand. Native offers some flavors in paper tubes which is a step in the right direction. I’m actively looking for brands that don’t pour hot chemicals into plastic tubes so I can rub in on my skin and absorb more plastic. A partial roll out seems like a marketing pacifier and not a brand commitment to doing better.

The Reality:
This one got me.
Clean branding. The package says all the right things and they’ve chosen earth tones for packaging. Also this feels like a better choice when you’re standing in the aisle trying to make a quick decision over more established regular options.
But it’s actually owned by Colgate-Palmolive. Much like the Native brand for P&G it’s got a good story but it’s one of the things… it matters to be about trying to be more intentional about where my money goes.
It doesn’t perform great. It’s good until about noon and then it’s all down hill. I don’t like the texture and it doesn’t hold up against the Florida heat.

The Reality:
This is where things get complicated.
Because this is actually the deodorant I’m using right now.
Not because it performs the best, it doesn’t. The truth is I’m out of Lume spray and I’ve committed to using the products I’ve purchased before buying new stuff.
This is a “didn’t make it past noon” deodorant most days in Florida.
But:
-
100% recycled packaging (but is that really better? It’s still plastic)
-
Certified B Corp
So what do I do?
I layer it.
Tom’s first then I come in with Secret or Dove spray over the top to make it through the day. Because that’s what I have at the moment.
Is it ideal? No.
Is it real life? Yes.
Also worth noting: still owned by a large parent company… which again, complicates things.

The Reality:
This is a dependable, no-drama option with a side of aluminum. It works fine but the stains to the shirts are annoying. I keep it on hand in case it’s a particularly hot day and I need to layer on top of my first deodorant selection of the day.

Secret Spray

The Reality:
This is part of my backup system. I bought it because it says Aluminum Free. However it stings like the dickens on my underarms after a shower and shaving. And I don’t like the way it smells…. reminds me of the smell of this one teacher I had in high school… he kept a bottle of gin (I think) in his desk and he had that sicky/sweet smell of alcohol if I got too close to him.
Also - I have a hard time using sprays because of the chemicals I’m breathing in every time I apply it.
Best not to think about it too much.

The Reality:
Very similar to Secret, but a little gentler and drier. In t his one the main ingredient is aluminum. And it’s a spray so the thought of inhaling aluminum haunts me. I mainly keep this one in my backpack for when I’m out and about and need a quick hit of DEO for my BEO.

Lume (Invisible Cream)
Official Rating: Actually Works
Tags: Florida Tested, Full Body Approved, Sticky Situation
Who owns this: Independent (founder-led brand)
The Reality:
This is what I use when I know I’m going to be outside all day. I do outside VIP events in Florida and I need to be presentable and non smelly at all times. I lather this stuff in all the places and it really does hold up all day.
This is one of the few products that can actually keep up with heat, humidity, and long days outside.
But the application… I just don’t love having to get in there with my hands in all the places in the middle of an event or just a sweaty day. Which is why I like the spray more. While this is a really good product I mainly use this when I know it’s going to be a 12 hour sweat-a-thon.
The cream also comes in what looks like a regular plastic container. One of my girls likes this. I still don’t love the cream application everyday.
And the packaging… still plastic. Hoping the founder can find an alternative solution to the tubes… isn’t corn plastic a thing?

Lume (Spray)
Official Rating: Actually Works/My Number 1
Tags: Florida Tested, Full Body Approved, Plastic Overload
Who owns this: Independent (founder-led brand)
The Reality:
This is my top performer right now.
The spray format is my favorite… easy, effective, and holds up through real-life conditions. I feel confident in the ingredient list and I like the fact that it uses ‘acidify-ing’ to clean the bacteria and skin not ‘balancing’ with chemicals and aluminum.
There is some inconsistency in the sprayer mechanism with the bottles… I’ve had two of them ‘click weird’ and then not spray right after some use. I have seen other reviews about this issue so I hope they can correct it soon.
These products are water based and don’t stain your clothes.
I love a good founder story and this brand has it. Lume is owned by an OB/GYN who understand women’s bodies and how they work.
Now… is it the greenest/cleanest ingredient list and packaging. No. Which leaves something to be desired.
But like everything there is a trade off. Lume works, there is no aluminum or baking soda in the product I like and I dig that my money stays with an independent company.

Final Thoughts:
After all of this… here’s what I’ve realized:
There is no deodorant that checks every box.
Not one.
The ones that work don’t always align with what I want in ingredients or packaging.
The ones that align don’t always make it past noon.
And once you start asking “who owns this?”… it gets even more complicated.
So instead of finding “the one”… I’ve ended up with a system and a lot of questions.
Because now when I stand in that aisle, I’m not just asking:
-
Does it work?
I’m also asking:
-
What’s actually in this?
-
What am I absorbing every day?
-
Is this packaging even trying?
-
And who am I supporting when I buy it?
I don’t have a perfect answer yet.
But I do know this…
I’m not blindly buying anymore.
And that feels like a start.
